Paul has an extended Viking sail in 2007

The sail is wider than the cross arm. This wide sail makes a perfect shape for sailing with the wind.

When sailing up wind, the extra sail on the leading edge folds back out of the way.

This design is perfect for modern sail boats, because they have the mast set more forward than the Vikings did.
