Oh Freddled Gruntbuggly

“Oh Freddled Gruntbuggly” was recorded entirely upon a kitchen chair. A contact audio pickup was attached to a spoke of a chair, and different parts of the chair were hit to produce different tones and sounds. I did this to show that anything can be an instrument, and that the most unexpected things can produce beautiful sound. The song starts out with a simple 7/4 time rhythm, and is then expanded upon with different accents and notes, all produced on that one chair. That pattern is repeated throughout the song with many tracks layered on top of it to produce what in the end sounds like a full drum ensemble, but is really just one chair.

“Oh Freddled Gruntbuggly” was produced to show how limited we are in our view of what instruments are. When we think of a band, we think of a guitar, bass, drums, and singer. When we think of music, we think of refined instruments that cost lots of money. Not many people realize that music is not a commodity. Music can come from anything, and through this song I was attempting to show how even a simple kitchen chair can produce wonderful music. This song arose, believe it or not, just by messing around with an attachable pickup. I was experimenting with attaching it to different objects and when I attached it to the chair I found it produced beautiful, full tones almost anywhere I hit it. I recorded a brief segment of fooling around, and soon developed it into a small little rhythm and song, just long enough to prove a point.
